A certain Mr. Cathen is mentioned in passing in a talk between Kwan and Hattie before going to Kimberly`s promotion as an Elika. Kwan admits to a date with him, saying it was the only real date after breaking up with Greg, saying it was mercifully short. Even though Hattie likes him as Kwan`s suitor, Kwan describes him as boorish. He seems snobbish and haughty, insulting Kwan`s school by calling it poor, which is the main reason Kwan is completely disinterested in him.
