We never meet Hattie`s tortured father in person, apart as a ghost at the end of his story. We first hear of him as Kwan`s neighbour who sold his daughter, Hattie to the Coalition tax investors because he could not pay taxes for his new horse. Damas, a neighbour calls him a drunk and claims that he will not be able to earn the money to buy Hattie back. We later learn that he started drinking as a result of his wife being taken by the Telepaths guild never to return. They leave the mortal realm together, her ghost waiting for him for years.
