Books: Kwan #2
Damas is one of Kwan`s neighbours, we see him as he petitions to get his antique lamp back from the tax auditors. He is well-intentioned and sympathetic towards Kwan and Hattie, offering support to Kwan and trying to goad some sense into a desolate Hattie. Damas is rational and pragmatic; even though he remembers better times, he does not wish to cause trouble for himself by speaking out against the unfairness of the current system. His is the voice of reason, but also of complacency of the little man, surrendered to the vicissitudes of politics.
